Murshid meaning
The word “murshid” comes from Arabic and means “guide” or “teacher.” It is often used to describe a spiritual leader who helps and guides their followers, especially in Sufism.
“Murshid” comes from the root word r-sh-d, which means to be wise, mature, and have integrity.
In Sufism, a person seeking spiritual enlightenment is called a “murīd.” This person follows a spiritual path under the guidance of a leader, who can be called a murshid, shaykh, or pir. A Sufi follower becomes a murīd when they take an oath, called “bayʿah,” with a murshid.
“Murshad” is also a male Muslim name meaning “preacher,” “guided to the right path,” or “on the correct path.” It is common in many Muslim-majority countries.
